Cumberland River Updates

Last Updated: March 20, 2007

The following update information applies only to the third edition of the "Cumberland River CruiseGuide," the last edition to be published.

  Fred Myers:

CRUISE SECTION

MILE 59.1
The entire Barkley State Park Marina was removed and built new in 2005. The park's impressive lodge and plenty of open and scenic space for walking and relaxing are why this marina has become a much more enjoyable stop for those traveling the Cumberland.

MILE 126.0
In late 2006, Clarksville dedicated a new 280-foot floating concrete dock at the foot of College Street in downtown. Because of unexpected cost overruns, the dock does not yet have water and electric power and won't have them anytime soon. Still, it offers a way for cruising boaters to take a close look at downtown. You must, however, get permission to dock there by calling 931-645-7476.

When you leave your boat, walk up to Riverside Drive, the street that parallels the river, and take the elevated walkway that crosses the street. Although the walkway turns to the right after about a half a block, keep walking straight then turn right into the drive leading to the entrance of the Riverside Inn. Pass the entrance, cross Main Street and in the middle of the next block is the Park and Recreation office. It's open 8 to 5, M-F. Stop there for a warm welcome and maps.

There are restaurants in the immediate area, including the locally popular Black Horse Pub and Brewery, open 11 to 11, every day. It does has a pub atmosphere and yes, they brew their own beer on the premises.

While you're there, take time to see several nearby historic structures, particularly the 1898 U.S. Post Office and Customs House and now a most interesting museum. It narrowly escaped destruction in 1999 from a tornado that destroyed or severely damaged many downtown buildings.

MILE 157.8
The new Harpeth Shoals Marina will be fully operational on or about Memorial Day, this year. It's a short distance downstream from the Montgomery Bell Bridge on the Ashland City side of the river. The marina is part of an impressive complex to consist of 136 condominium units and a restaurant. For more information, call 888-792-7924 or 615-792-7924.

MILE 158.0
Diesel fuel is no longer available at the Riverview Marina & Resturant.

MILE 236.8
Diesel fuel is now available at Gallatin Marina.

MILE 237.8
Note this correction. This anchorage is at starboard rather than at port.

MILE 316.8
Allen and Carolyn Vires who bought Defeated Creek Marina in 2005 continue to make improvements for transient boaters who come to enjoy the impressive scenery offered by this part of the upper Cumberland. The restaurant on the premises is open all year with an abbreviated schedule during the winter months.
